What actions does CVCC take to Manage Loan Default Rates?
- CVCC has an institutional policy that each enrollee’s aggregate limit amount on Title IV loans and other federal education loans (past and current) is $15,000.
- Individual student loan balances are verified by using their Institutional Student Information
Record and information on the National Student Loan Data System.
- Students are required to fill out Student Loan Entrance and Exit Interviews.
- Financial Aid office fills out all servicer’s requests for additional information on previous students using student files from both the Financial Aid Office and Departmental Files.
- CVCC’s institutional policy of limiting the use of federal funding to tuition only, leads to lower amounts of student’s loans.
- CVCC utilizes strategic disbursement dates on federal loans to ensure funding is earned.
- We encourage students to only borrow funds that are needed, and emphasize that these are loans that will be required to be paid back.
- We encourage our students to pursue all other avenues of educational funding, including state and local training funds and various other scholarships in order to keep loans to a minimum.
- We offer part-time programs which allow students to continue working while they attend school, therefore lowering the amount of loan money needed.
- We have an institutional policy of holding official grade transcripts, references, and confirmation of enrollment until corrective action is documented on any Title IV programs that are in default.
- We emphasize to students the negative ramifications of becoming in default on Student Loans.
- We offer tuition payment plan options and staggered due dates on fees to allow students to budget for their costs of education and therefore lower loan amounts needed than if we required all costs up front.
- We notify students that loan amounts can be cancelled, reduced or returned if not needed. We also help students to make changes if requested.
- We provide students with the “Funding Education Beyond High School, The Guide to Federal Student Aid” which explains in details the student’s rights and responsibilities.
- We advise students of in school deferments and other benefits available to keep loans out of default. We also explain to them their loan grace period and how it can be affected.
